Oral mucocele

An oral mucocele cyst or mucocele is a fluid-filled lump that develops on the inner part of the lip or inside the mouth. Mucous cysts can form anywhere in the mouth, but they are most common on the lower lip. These types of cysts usually do not cause pain and are temporary. Of course, not treating mucous cysts leads to their permanent status.

What factors cause mucous cysts?

Mucous cysts are usually caused by mouth injuries and lack of oral and dental hygiene. Factors such as:

·         Lip biting (the most common cause)

·         Biting the lip or cheek

·         Mouth piercing

·         Accidental rupture of the salivary gland

·         Chronic damage caused by teeth

What are the symptoms of a mucous cyst?

Mucous cyst symptoms depend on the penetration of the cyst into the skin and the frequency of its occurrence. Most cysts are not painful but cause discomfort.

Symptoms of cysts that form near the surface of the skin:

·         Swelling

·         Bluish color

·         Soft

·         Diameter less than 1 cm

Symptoms of cysts that form deep in the skin:

·         Are round

·         Whitish color

·         Soft

How is a mucous cyst treated?

The type of treatment depends on the severity of the cyst. Sometimes, mucous cysts do not need treatment and will heal over time. Superficial cysts often heal on their own. If mucous cysts occur frequently, medical treatment is needed to remove them.

Treatment methods for oral mucosal cysts that are not very severe include:

Laser therapy: In this method, a small beam of light is used to destroy the cyst.

Cryotherapy: In this method, they destroy the cyst by freezing it.

Corticosteroid injection: In this method, corticosteroids are injected into the cyst to reduce inflammation and speed up recovery.

To prevent the recurrence of the cyst, the doctor may surgically remove the cyst or the salivary gland from the mouth.

Mucous cysts heal from one week to several months after starting the treatment, depending on the type and severity of the cyst.

Summary

Mucous cysts are easily treated after diagnosis. These cysts are benign, so you should not worry when you see them. The biggest complications caused by mucous cysts are pain and discomfort.
