What is a bone spur (also known as a bone spicule)?

Bone spurs, also known as bone spicules, are bony protrusions in the soft tissue of your gums. Bone in gums is a little fragment of bone that becomes stuck in your gum and causes discomfort, inflammation, and swelling in the area. Diseases, oral surgery (e.g. tooth extraction), drugs, and dental trauma or injury can all induce bone spurs. Osteonecrosis of the jaw is the medical term for a bone spur or spicule in the gum (ONJ). Necrosis means "dead," and it refers to a dead bone fragment that protrudes from your gum. It can occur in both jaws, and you may believe it is caused by your broken teeth, but it is not.
Dental bone spicules can occur in your mouth as a result of a variety of oral treatments. These treatments have the potential to cause harm to the bone beneath a tooth or teeth.

The surrounding bone begins to mend itself immediately after an oral operation. However, in certain situations, bone pieces remain at the operation site. These bone pieces are sent out of your body through your gums, away from the mending bone.

Bone spicules can be caused by a variety of procedures, including:
Extraction of teeth
The extraction of a tooth or teeth from your jawbones is known as tooth extraction. The following are some of the most common reasons for tooth extraction, including wisdom tooth extraction:

Inadequate tooth development
abscess gum disease fractured or damaged tooth painful tooth or teeth
decay of the teeth
Dental crowding or misalignment necessitates the use of an orthodontic device, such as braces, to avoid future tooth issues (as is the case with some wisdom teeth)

Dental implants are a type of dental implant that is
The replacement of a tooth's roots with a metal post fashioned like a screw, and the installation of prosthetic teeth on these posts, is known as dental implant surgery. Metal posts are surgically placed into the jawbone.

Biopsy of the bone in the mouth
Your doctor may need to do a biopsy if you're being evaluated or treated for cancer of the oral bones or gums.

A biopsy is when a tiny needle or knife is used to remove bone or tissue from the body. A biopsy can reveal the presence of aberrant cells, such as those that cause cancer.
What are the most common locations for bone spurs to appear?
Bone spicules form around the bony components of your mouth, such as your ligament and jaw bones. Bone spurs or spicules are most commonly found in the following places:

In your gums, both upper and lower jaw, the sites in your mouth where you've had a tooth extracted, the locations in your mouth where you've had surgical operations involving your jaw bone, such as periodontal surgery or a dental implant
